Violich Capital Management is a boutique investment management firm dedicated to providing the highest level of expertise and service to our clients. The majority of our senior managers and client service professionals have worked together for several decades. We currently have four investment professionals and four support personnel to service client relationships.

Adam A. Violich

President, Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager

Adam Violich began his career at Bechtel Corporation in 1992 as an environmental engineer, transitioning to working with the Executive Committee to develop strategic initiatives for the company’s business lines before returning to business school. Following graduation, he joined Robertson, Stephens as an associate and manager in its Private Capital Group. In 1999, he was a founding member of E*Offering Corp. where he headed the Private Capital Group. He was responsible for sourcing, evaluating, marketing and structuring equity capital for private late-stage technology companies. Adam was subsequently employed by SG Cowen Securities as a Managing Director and headed the West Coast Private Equity Group. Adam joined Violich Capital Management in 2005 as a portfolio manager. In addition to managing client portfolios, Adam directs the firm’s research efforts. He was elected President of Violich Capital Management in 2012.

Paul A. Violich, CFA, CIC

Paul Violich entered the investment management profession as a security analyst for Brundage, Story and Rose in New York City. He joined Wentworth, Hauser and Violich in 1966 as a portfolio manager and served as Chairman from 1980 to 1999, during which time the firm’s assets under management grew to over $3 billion. He founded Violich Capital Management in 1999. Paul devotes his time to economic and corporate research as well as portfolio management. He was awarded the Chartered Investment Counsel designation by the Investment Counsel Association and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is a past director of the Security Analysts of San Francisco, a member of the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of San Francisco and the National Association of Business Economists. Paul is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fine Arts Museums Foundation of San Francisco, a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a member of the Athletic Board at Stanford University and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Art Center College of Design.

Matthew J. Schmidt, CFA

Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst

Matthew Schmidt began his career with Wentworth, Hauser & Violich (now WHV Investment Management) in 1997 where he worked with Paul Violich and other members of the Violich Capital team as an equity trader and associate. Matt was subsequently employed at mPower Advisors and State Street, and he joined Dodge & Cox in 2003 as a portfolio management associate, contributing to equity research and client communications. In 2008, he joined Stewart & Patten as a research analyst and was promoted to Director of Research. He joined Violich Capital in 2014 as a portfolio manager and research analyst. Matt is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder, and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of San Francisco.

Charles H. Raven

Charles Raven entered the investment management profession as a portfolio manager for Lionel D. Edie and Company. Charlie subsequently was associated with McCullough, Andrews and Cappiello and joined Hanson Investment Management Company in 1983 as a portfolio manager. From 1993 to 1998, he served as Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer. In 1998, Charlie founded Charles Raven Capital Management. Charlie has been affiliated with Violich Capital Management since 2006.
